In a worse case, the home was do for a new roof and as you can see, the existing flashings were well beyond repair. In most cases the bucket of tar would be brought out and although most roofers can lay down a nice looking bead of tar, it would not have lasted more than a few years and you're still left with the unsightly mess shown here.
